Hemorrhoidectomy & Rubber Band  Ligation

A hemorrhoidectomy is surgery to remove internal or external hemorrhoids that are extensive or severe. Surgical hemorrhoidectomy is the most effective treatment for hemorrhoids, though it is associated with the greatest rate of complications.

We have a fully equipped, state of the art, in-rooms gastrointestinal unit and recovery area, where Band Ligations are performed.  Dr Swart is assisted by his full time Anaesthetist Dr Alta Marais and his technician during all of these procedures.  Dr Swart has successfully carried out many procedures in this Unit since it's inception in October 2019.

Making use of our in rooms procedures eliminates the need for a lengthy and unnecessary hospital stay, and makes the process easier for the patient to be sedated within the in-room setting and makes it possible to return home shortly after the procedure.  We have an easy payment system for your convenience to make co-payments for the in rooms procedures.

Why would I need surgery?

A hemorrhoidectomy is used for large external hemorrhoids and internal hemorrhoids that have prolapsed or are causing problems and not responding to nonsurgical management. This procedure usually takes place in a hospital. You and your surgeon will decide on the best anesthesia to use during the surgery.

What does the surgery involve?

Closed hemorrhoidectomy is the surgical procedure most commonly used to treat internal hemorrhoids. It consists of the excision of hemorrhoidal bundles using a sharp instrument, such as a scalpel, scissors, electrocautery, or even laser followed by complete wound closure with absorbable suture.  Rubber band ligation is a procedure in which the hemorrhoid is tied off at its base with rubber bands, cutting off the blood flow to the hemorrhoid. This treatment is only for internal hemorrhoids. To do this procedure, a doctor inserts a viewing instrument (anoscope) into the anus.

What can I expect after my surgery?

After you have hemorrhoids removed, you can expect to feel better each day. Your anal area will be painful or ache for 2 to 4 weeks. And you may need pain medicine. It is common to have some light bleeding and clear or yellow fluids from your anus.  After rubber band ligation, you may feel pain and have a feeling of fullness in your lower belly, or you may feel as if you need to have a bowel movement. This usually goes away within several days after the surgery. You may need pain medicine during this time.  Dr Swart will advise you on follow up after the surgery or procedure.
